Movistar Argentina (Telefonica) and Ericsson have announced the first successful trial of 5G technology in the country, hitting download speeds of 20Gbps during a test carried out at the operator’s headquarters in Buenos Aires, reports Telecompaper on November 10, 2017. The partners combined Massive MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output), beamforming and beam tracking platforms for the trial, which was conducted via 28GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. The network will enable local telecommunications operators and other ecosystem partners in the fields of healthcare, academia, agriculture and energy to test the full capabilities of 5G technology on an active network, said Ericsson in a statement.
The 5G test comes after Movistar and Ericsson last week launched an LTE Advanced (LTE-A) service in the cities of La Plata and Mar del Plata in the Buenos Aires province following an investment of ARS 850 million.
