Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has announced a successful pre-commercial trial of 5G technology on its Vivo NEX smartphone series. The company added a Qualcomm X50 modem to its current NEX S flagship and included a non-standalone architecture model that combined both LTE and New Radio (NR) antennas, based on 3GPP Release 15 standards. The 5G pre-commercial smartphone will now undergo further IODT tests with 5G infrastructure and networking equipment, said Vivo, adding that its aim is to launch the first batch of commercial 5G smartphones by 2019.
Vivo set up its 5G Research Institute in Beijing in 2016 and has been working closely with companies such as Qualcomm on 5G developments. In fact Qualcomm announced in February that 18 OEM partners had agreed to implement its X50 5G modem into smartphones and other devices by 2019.
