Telecom Italia (TIM) announced that its fixed line “ultrabroadband” services, providing internet access speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, are now available in a total of 19 million homes in 2,500 Italian localities, equivalent to 80 percent of the country. In a statement, TIM said over 1,800 localities can access download speeds of up to 200 Mbps via FTTC and EVDSL technology, while a further 2.9 million homes in 116 localities – including 30 major cities – can subscribe to speeds of up to 1Gbps via FTTH networks.

TIM has so far rolled out some 16 million kilometres of fibre-optic cable nationwide and is on target to connect a further 100 major localities to its FTTH network by 2020 under its “DigiTIM” strategic plan. The operator added that its 4G-LTE coverage has already reached 98 percent of the population and it recently invested some EUR 2.4 billion to secure some of the most important frequency blocks in the national 5G spectrum tender.
