Telefonica Germany said it has installed the first 5G point-to-point radio system in two locations of the 5G TechCity project in the north of Munich.
The system connects a eNodeB site to the core network over a distance of more than 5 km. Telefonica uses two frequencies, 18 GHz and 80 GHz, to achieve the transmission rate of 16 Gbps. The transmission in the lower band at 18 GHz serves primarily for user data and voice exchanges, while over 80 GHz all the other data services are transmitted over the point-to-point system. If the traffic on the 18 GHz connection exceeds a certain limit, the system automatically switches to 80 GHz.
