Vodafone UK has started lab tests of a mock 5G smartphone at the Vodafone Technology Centre in Newbury in partnership with Ericsson and Qualcomm. This is part of its UK-wide trial of 5G in seven cities.
The partners are conducting ‘over the air’ tests with a 5G smartphone ‘form factor’ test device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem using Ericsson radio equipment. The device is similar in size to 5G mobile phones currently in development.
Vodafone’s is testing 5G technology at various sites across the cities of London, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham. Earlier this week, engineers in Salford, Greater Manchester, downloaded a movie (1 hour 45 minutes) over 5G in 24 seconds. Using carrier aggregation, the same movie was downloaded in 1 minute and 35 seconds over 4G.
