O2 Czech Republic has launched a mobile network with service speed up to 1 Gbps, advertised as 5G speed, in Kolin. This is ten times the speed offered via LTE in the rest of the country. At the same time, the operator offers smartphones supporting the service at a discount of CZK 5,000. O2 also offers mobile internet for home use at up to 250 Mbps.
The speed is reached by the combination of carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM. To benefit from the higher speed, customers need an LTE smartphone of category 16 or higher. The operator offers e.g. the Samsung Galaxy S9 at a discount of CZK 5,000.
Since mid-November, O2 has been offering home internet via the mobile network. Now, the operator will offer it at the speed of 250/25 Mbps, which has been available only via cable so far.
O2 is building the network together with CETIN.
