Ookla announced the launch of a global map of 5G networks. The owner of the Speedtest site has based initial data on public announcements on 5G networks and said it will update the map as more users test the networks over Speedtest.
The map covers deployments underway and in testing as well as live networks. All use 5G New Radio standards. At time of launch, Ookla identified 20 operators that have deployed 5G networks in 294 locations across the globe. As certain locations benefit from multiple roll-outs, the total number of deployments comes to 303.
Swiss operators Swisscom and Sunrise are leading the 5G charge by providing 5G network accessibility in a combined total of 225 cities, each with commercial availability. In the US, 21 cities have 5G availability. All but two of these roll-outs were launched by AT&T with limited availability, with the other cities being Verizon in Chicago and Minneapolis. In South Korea, the company is tracking 16 cities with limited availability and two with commercial availability. Telstra and Optus in Australia also operate limited availability 5G networks in 12 cities.
