Vodafone Germany said it has partnered with Airbus to test 5G in the sky. The companies will test 5G on a 12m Altair airship over Aldenoven, where the 5G Mobility Lab of Vodafone is located.
The airship is controlled by waypoints transmitted from Frankfurt am Main. For this, Vodafone provides a complete 5G network, from the antenna technology to the software and the connection. Vodafone provides the necessary bandwidth and latency to remotely control the airship and creates a local network for the service through network slicing.
Pictures can be taken with cameras from the airship, for example, to support the police and emergency services in their work to guarantee safety at events. Photos can be used to create 3D models and maps, for navigation systems and autonomous vehicles. Airbus and Vodafone plan to jointly develop the 5G applications for practical use.
