Hong Kong operator HKT has acquired 30MHz of 5G spectrum in the 3.3 GHz band in the government’s latest auction. The spectrum utilisation fee for this spectrum for 15 years totals HKD 199.5 million. Designed for indoor use, the 3.3 GHz band spectrum supplements 3.5 GHz band spectrum to provide extra capacity at heavily loaded indoor environments such as underground. Together with its existing 3G and 4G spectrum, HKT customers are now expected to have access to an upgraded service at outdoor as well as indoor locations.
With 30MHz in the 3.3 GHz band of 5G spectrum acquired this week, HKT has acquired a total of 120MHz of mid-band 5G spectrum, including 50MHz of 5G spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band and 40MHz in the 4.9 GHz band acquired at two government auctions earlier. Together with the 400MHz of 5G spectrum in the 26-28 GHz bands administratively assigned by the government in March this year, HKT will have a total of 520MHz of 5G spectrum by the time of the completion of the assignment in April 2020.
HKT plans to launch 5G services in Hong Kong in the second quarter of 2020.
Also in the same auction, China Mobile Hong Kong won spectrum in the 3380 – 3400 MHz frequency range for HKD 133 million, Hutchison Telephone secured blocks in the 3300 – 3330 MHz frequency range for HKD 199.5 million, and SmarTone won spectrum in the 3360 – 3380 MHz frequency range for HKD 133 million.
