Caribbean-focused operator Digicel has acquired spectrum in the 700MHz band for its Trinidad and Tobago unit, allowing it to launch 4G services in the coming weeks, reports local portal TechNewsTT. The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) assigned a 10MHz frequency block to the operator, half of what it says it needs, to complement its existing capacity in the 1900MHz and 850MHz bands.

Digicel has upgraded 200 cell sites with 700MHz band capacity, which can also be used for future 5G services, said DigicelTT’s CTO Chandrika Samaroo, adding that the operator has already reached speeds of 430Mbps using the new band.

The first 200 sites cost USD 25 million as part of Digicel’s 2018 expansion programme and the company plans to allocate between USD 20 and 30 million to deploy another 30 sites between February and March 2021 and 80 additional sites in underserved areas over the next year.
