Greek operator OTE announced plans to further expand its VDSL and 4G networks, reported Telecompaper.com on July 14, 2014. VDSL is now available in 280 local exchanges across Greece and 2,250 outdoor cabinets in Attica, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, Komotini, Xanthi and Serres. In June, VDSL was expanded to the Attica regions of Halandri and Ilioupoli, and another 1,500 outdoor cabinets are scheduled for activation by the end of the year in various districts of Athens and Thessaloniki. These areas include Kifisia, Nea Kifisia, Nea Philadelfeia, Neo Irakleio, Holargos, Kalamaki, Psychiko, Agia Paraskevi and Oraiokastro, as well as the remaining un-covered parts of Kalamaria and Thermi. In addition, 150 new local exchanges outside Athens and Thessaloniki will offer VDSL by the year’s end.

In total, VDSL has been made available to 1.2 million households and businesses across Greece, and OTE’s goal is to increase its coverage to 30 percent of the population by the end of 2014. The 4G network is expected to reach 70 percent of the population by the year’s end, compared to approximately 60 percent currently.
