KPN follows LTE-A launch with VoLTE trial

Dutch telco KPN has announced the introduction of a voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) trial in association with its technical partners Alcatel-Lucent, Samsung and Mavenir Systems, according to Telegeography.com on July 28, 2014. Rather than inviting its existing customers to test the advanced technology, KPN has enlisted a number of technology journalists to provide feedback.

The development follows hot on the heels of KPN’s introduction of LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology on July 1. Enhanced connectivity was made available in selected cities that the telco identified as heavy 4G usage areas, namely: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Eindhoven. KPN’s LTE-A network aggregates frequencies in the 800MHz and 1,800MHz bands. Joost Steltenpool, director of access at KPN, commented: “Compare 4G with a highway. With the 800MHz frequency, we had a six-lane highway. With the introduction of the 1,800MHz frequency, we are increasing the number of lanes to nine!”
