BEIJING, Aug 22, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- It is said that China Mobile Ltd. (hk:0941) has produced TD-LTE (4G) multi-mode mobile phone test model, which is reckoned to reach commercialized level in the second half of 2012.

Whole solutions of this new type of mobile phone are supplied by ZTE Corporation (000063.SZ). This mobile phone is based upon Android system and supports TD-LTE, TD-SCDMA and GSM network environments. The mobile phone is able to smartly choose TD-LTE network in TD-LTE covered regions and shifts it into TD-SCDMA or GSM in TD-SCDMA or GSM covered regions.

China Mobile has made substantive progress in promoting products based upon TD-LTE; some leading device makers in and out of China have launched the pre-commercialized products; 17 globally leading chip makers are researching and developing the TD-LTE chips.

Board chairman of China Mobile and CEO of Apple Inc. (AAPL) have talked with each other for several times and have reached a strategic agreement in launching TD-LTE-based iPhone. It is predicted that iPhone will become one of the most important mobile models among TD-LTE-based products of China Mobile.

Feb 14 2011, Barcelona, Spain. During GSMA World Congress 2011, China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou, Bharti Chairman Sunil and Softbank Chairman Masayoshi Son, together with more than 300 high-level management delegates from more than 60 global operators and 30 vendors, held the 3rd LTE TDD/FDD Summit. The summit shared with industry the TD-LTE deployment plan from global operators and the latest development status of end to end products. The summit also witnessed the kick-off of Global TD-LTE initiative by three Chairmen. GTI is an initiative on TD-LTE global development with the involvement from Bharti, China Mobile, Clearwire, E-Plus, Softbank, Aero2, Vodafone.

In the summit, Bairtel’ Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal, China Mobile’s Chairman Wang Jianzhou, and Softbank’s Chairman Masayoshi Son, announced Global TD Initiative (GTI). GTI is a global platform to facilitate multilateral cooperation among TD-LTE stakeholders to promote TD-LTE as the mainstream technology over unpaired spectrum. GTI will focus on creating value for stakeholders across the TD-LTE ecosystem to bring the technology to market faster, promoting the convergence of LTE TDD and FDD modes to maximize the economies of scale, and synergizing other compatible TDD technologies e.g., XGP with TD-LTE to establish a growth focused business environment.

"The fast development of TD-LTE technology is driven by the exponentially growing mobile data traffics. TD-LTE has gained common interests from all the operators with unpaired spectrum, including incumbent 2G/3G mobile operators, PHS operators, WiMAX operators and Greenfield operators," said Mr. Jianzhou Wang, Chairman of China Mobile Communications Corporation. Apart from China Mobile, Bharti and Softbank, Major telecommunication carriers including Vodafone, Reliance, Orange and E-Plus delivered speeach in summite. Global system vendors such as Alcatel-Lucent, Datang Mobile, Ericsson Huawei, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, ZTE, and main terminal/chipset vendors such as Huawei Hisilicon, Innofidei, Marvell, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sequans and ST-Ericsson, discussed in panel sessions. They shared development strategies, network trial experiences, product roadmaps and testing technologies.

In addition, Vodafone and China Mobile jointly set up the first converged TDD/FDD LTE demonstration network worldwide, which shows TD-LTE’s high performance and converging ability with LTE FDD.

TD-LTE industry has made significant progress during past several years. LTE TDD/FDD standards evaluated synchronized. TD-LTE end to end products provided by various venders were successfully launched in 2010. There are more than 20 trial networks worldwide and 2 commercial networks are under construction. China, the biggest potential market of TD-LTE, kicked-off large scale trial in January. It is believed that year 2011 will be the milestone for TD-LTE commercial service.
