Mobitel testing 1800MHz LTE
Telekom Slovenije’s mobile arm Mobitel, which is due to be merged with its parent on 1 July, has revealed that it is currently testing Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband technology in the 1800MHz frequency band in Ljubljana.
The cellco obtained test frequencies from Slovenia’s telecoms regulator, the Post and Electronic Communications Agency (APEK), and its longer term strategy involves deploying LTE and LTE-Advanced networks using 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum. Separately, Mobitel has disclosed that it is nearing the end of testing dual carrier (DC) HSPA+ technology, which enables the boosting of maximum theoretical HSPA+ data speeds from 21Mbps to above 42Mbps. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Mobitel carried out a ‘promotional launch’ of HSPA+ services in April 2010, covering around a third of its 3G base stations at that date.
