MVS to shut down WiMAX service

MVS Net is to shut down its WiMAX service at the end of June, according to local newspaper El Universal citing comments made by company spokesperson Felipe Chao. MVS’s decision comes after a prolonged battle to renew its licence.

As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in February 2010 the Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) confirmed that it would not renew MVS’s nine 2.5GHz band concessions, with the regulator at that date reiterating previous claims of poor spectrum utilization by the operator, while also adding that global trends suggested that the frequencies would be put to better use by technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). The operator – set up by a consortium involving MVS Comunicaciones, Intel, Clearwire and Alestra – has approximately 14,000 subscribers.
