GTI and Huawei Jointly Release Mobile Broadband Foundation Network White Paper
[November 12, 2020, Shanghai, China] At the 11th Global Mobile Broadband Forum (Global MBBF), GTI and Huawei jointly released the Mobile Broadband Foundation Network White Paper. Li Nan, Chair of GTI\'s Spectrum Working Group, delivered a keynote speech, calling upon joint efforts worldwide in promoting the development of the mobile broadband industry to improve the mobile broadband network coverage, connect the unconnected, develop digital services, and bridge the digital divide.
The white paper points out that broadband connections are essential for social and economic progress, and ubiquitous connections contribute heavily to improving economic structures and social efficiency, propelling the global economy to the track of sustainable development.
Currently, mobile broadband is developing at varying rates globally. In China and South Korea, where 4G users already account for over 80% of mobile connections, 5G rollout is being vigorously promoted to offload mobile broadband traffic. However, for the majority of other countries, 4G is still the most suited mobile communication technology to achieve connectivity inclusiveness. Well-established coverage, massive users, and generally affordable terminal prices have turned 4G into the primary technology to bridge the digital divide, as well as the main source of revenues for most carriers.
However, the development of mobile broadband varies greatly among countries due to the differences in population density, economic levels, education, and technological advancement, as well as within countries due to differences in geographical environments, economic levels, and population distribution. Mobile broadband development faces numerous challenges in spectrum and site resources, affordability, digital skills, and local digital services.
The white paper provides an in-depth analysis of these challenges and offers suggestions on aspects including spectrum allocation, public investments, site acquisition, development of entry-level terminals, network coverage improvement, user migration, and cultivation of local digital services, presenting extensive reference to the development of the global mobile broadband industry.
"The pandemic this year highlights the importance of mobile broadband connections, and many countries have included the development of mobile broadband into their national strategies. Against this backdrop, GTI and Huawei had worked together to compile this white paper based on their experience in the global mobile broadband development. This white paper provides comprehensive reference and strong operability for the implementation of mobile broadband plans in different countries in terms of policies, networks, users, terminals, and services." said Huang Yuhong, Secretary General of GTI.
Since its establishment in 2011, GTI has been a significant force in promoting the development of the global mobile communications industry. With the evolution from 4G to 5G around 2016, GTI has added the advancement of 5G technologies and industry maturity as well as cross-sector joint innovations to its agenda in addition to driving continuous 4G development. GTI offers a powerful platform to foster international cooperation in the mobile communications industry.
