In the five years since its first commercial launch, the commercial value of 5G has been gradually unleashed. 5G development is now entering the 5G-Advanced stage. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a key driver for profound changes in human productivity and lifestyle. The development of 5G-A and AI are becoming intertwined. Whereas AI is empowering 5G-A to expandmore Cases, the 5G-A infrastructure is allowing AI to develop to its full potential. Together, 5G-A and AI are creating a new era of 5G A2, which will bring new opportunities and create new business values for the industry.

At MWC Barcelona, GTI launched the 5G-A×AI Development Program to promote the integrated innovation of 5G and AI in technology, business, ecology, and commerce, and two-way empowerment. Therefore, 5G is smarter and AI is more ubiquitous, which will support the goals of GTI 3.0. First, Build Open Labs to provide basic environment, equipment facilities, industry application scenarios and other resources for 5G-AxAI integration innovation, and carry out the R&D, testing and demonstration of new technologies and solutions. Second, Build an Open Collaborative Innovation Community, with an online platform for “Communication and Sharing” and “Supply and Demand Matching”, and jointly carry out cutting-edge exploration, technical research, testing and iterative optimization. Third, Explore Innovative 5G-AxAI Integration Use Cases, and condense themreplicable business model templates, so as to provide references for value creation and monetization.

At the GTI Summit 2024, Mr. Gao Tongqing, Co-chairman of GTI and EVP of China Mobile, released and made detailed interpretation for the joint report of 5G-A x AI New Era, New Opportunities, New Value by GTI and China Intelligence.

Apart from that, the executives and top-level representatives from MIIT, GSMA, operators like China Mobile, KT, NTT DOCOMO, Bharti Airtel, Globe and Elisa, as well as from industry partners like Qualcomm and NVIDIA, shared their insightful views on the integration of 5G and AI.

Mr. Craig Ehrlich, Co-chairman of GTI: As we evolved to GTI 3.0, we’re promoting the next phase of development of our industry with the focus on 5G+ AI. That is also the primary focus of this summit.

Mr. Zhang Yunming, Vice Minister of MIIT of China: Promoting the integrated innovation of technologies of 5G, AI, ISAC and Passive IoT, and realizing industrial development led by technological breakthroughs.

Mr. Mats Granryd, Director General of GSMA: 5G is the technology by far that has been the quickest adoption of all standards globally. It’s estimated that by 2030, roughly $15 trillion of extra GDP will come from AI.

Mr. Yang Jie, Chairman of China Mobile: Data has become a new factor of production, computing force has become a new basic energy, and AI has become a new production tool. These factors bring a wide development space for the development of the information services industry.

Mr. Cristiano R. Amon, President & CEO of Qualcomm: Digitalization and AI are the key drivers for future development. The primary task of 5G development is to help operators apply Gen-AI, and the integration of 5G and AI will also accelerate new opportunities for operators to monetize network.

Mr. Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO of Bharti Airtel: Gen-AI is a new emerging trend. With the capabilities of 5G low latency, we need to both build standalone networks and need a lot of applications getting written.

Mr. Ernest L. Cu, President & CEO of Globe Telecom: AI can bring about a whole slew of automation initiatives, and accelerate digital and automotive development for operators.

Mr. Phil Oh, CTO / SEVP of KT: KT has been at the very center of CT Innovation with its leadership role, and has been heavily investing in Cloud and IT technologies. KT is now transformingAICT.

Mr. Takehiro Nakamura, CSO of NTT DOCOMO: The direction of mobile operators’ monetization strategy is the creation of new revenue sources, strengthening ties with customers and improving network quality. Gen-AI will be a development trend for the industry.

Mr. Veli-Matti Mattila, CEO of Elisa: We need to make money faster and get to the mass market kind of earnings with 5G. AI will take a big role in autonomous networks and cybersecurity.

Mr. Soma Velayutham, Global Industry Business Development Lead for Telecoms of NVIDIA: Invest in a common infrastructure to both deliver the Gen-AI and 5G data centers, which will accelerate monetization for operators.
