Mobile network operator (MNO) Vodafone Fiji has said it is working with the government to formalise the spectrum and other regulatory aspects that will be needed for the commercial launch of 5G, The Fiji Times reports. 

In a press release, the cellco confirmed: ‘Vodafone has always stood ready to embrace the next generation of mobile network technology … Since we began testing Pre-5G in 2017, our team has worked diligently to ensure a seamless transition to this advanced network to provide 5G services to our valued customers … Significant capital investments have been made in the network and infrastructure and we had started to trial Pre-5G and then progressedhaving all aspects of our network to enable full 5G.’

According to the paper, the MNO has been actively collaborating with technology vendors such as Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle Cloud Platform, as well as industry partners and regulatory authorities to be ready for next-generation networks.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate its main rival Digicel Fiji launched its own 5G test network in Suva only last week, stating that the testing process will last for twelve months.
