Azerbaijani cellco Azerfon (operating under the brand name Nar) has announced the launch of a 5G pilot network in the city of Sumgait. The company claims the activation of the network in test mode at its local store on Wednesday makes it the first mobile network operator (MNO) to provide 5G services outside the capital Baku. Nar subscribers connecting to the 5G network for the first time are being offered a complimentary 10GB data package.

Commenting on the launch, Nar CEO Gunnar Pahnke said: ‘Into provide the best digital experience for our subscribers, we are proud to present 5G technology for the first time in a city outside the capital – Sumgait. We are sure that this innovation will create a great opportunity for our customers to explore new digital possibilities.’
