Hong Kong telco HKT has launched its first fibre-optic access networks on Lamma Island under a government-subsidised network expansion programme.

By the end of this year 19 of the island’s villages will have fibre connectivity, offering a vast improvement on the previous peak speed of 30Mbps. HKT says the 10Gbps-capable symmetric passive optical network (XGS-PON) infrastructure on the island will also help enhance 5G mobile services.
