Telit Cinterion announced the completion of a successful proof-of-concept trial of private 5G for factory automation.

In a release, the company said that the trial was conducted in partnership with Nestlé Brazil

Nestlé conducted the trial at Parque Tecnologico São José dos Campos, a government-sponsored research park where it is one of the resident companies exploring next-generation technologies and business processes. Telit Cinterion noted that the trial focused on how Nestlé could use 5G technology to connect autonomous manufacturing robots and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) at its plants.

The trial used the Telit Cinterion 5G FT980-WW evaluation kit, which features the FN980 module. Based on the 3GPP Release 15 standard, the FN980m supports all major 5G frequency bands. The Nestlé trial focused on the use of sub-6 GHz spectrum.

“Telit Cinterion has been a partner of Nestlé since we began conducting the first tests using 5G technology at Nestlé’s Innovation and Technology Center (CIT) at the São José dos Campos Technology Park. Earlier this year, Telit Cinterion announced the FE990, a 5G sub-6 GHz module series designed for bandwidth-intensive fixed and mobile applications such as industrial IoT, mobile routers, private enterprise networks and residential broadband. The FE990 features the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF System from Qualcomm Technologies.

The company said that the FE990 module is compatible with the 3GPP Release 16, whose advanced features include enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). These features make the FE990 ideal for bandwidth-intensive applications such as private enterprise networks, 4K/8K streaming video, mobile routers, drones for public safety, telemetry for agricultural, forestry and lawn care machinery, residential broadband, telemedicine and Industry 4.0 factory automation, Telit Cinteron said.
