The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia has announced the launch of a consultation process for its National 5G Strategy, which aims to ‘nurture economic growth and innovation, establish regulatory frameworks, champion research leadership, and introduce notable societal advancements’.
It focuses on the deployment of 5G infrastructure nationwide, guaranteeing equitable and affordable access to advanced internet and communication services across Somalia’s expansive terrain. The strategy outlines a roadmap for 5G spectrum allocation and its subsequent infrastructure development, emphasising harmonised spectrum integration across various bands, including the 700MHz, 1427MHz-1518MHz, 3300MHz-4200MHz, 26GHz and 28GHz ranges.
‘The 5G draft strategy reflects the Ministry of Communication and Technology’s ICT Policy and Strategy 2019-24, dedicated to advancing communication and technology in Somalia,’ commented Minister for Communications and Technology Ahmed Dirie, adding: ‘The launch of this consultation invites all stakeholders to share their insights and recommendations for this strategy.’
The public and industry stakeholders have been invited to submit comments on the National 5G Strategy by 2 November 2023.
