BT Misses Deadline for Removal of Huawei Equipment from Network Core

BT Group has reportedly missed a deadline to completely remove Huawei equipment from the core of its network, Mobile World Live reports, although the operator has claimed it has completed 99% of the work.

A BT spokesperson was cited by the report as confirming that all 4G and 5G data sessions and voice calls are now delivered by non-Huawei core equipment, with only 2G and 3G voice and data services yet to be migrated. The latter, it is claimed, ‘accounts for less than 1% of the total traffic’.

With BT having been required to remove all Huawei equipment from its network core by 31 December 2023, having failed to do it could now face fines of up to 10% of its revenue, or GBP100,000 per day, for each day beyond the deadline.

BT has, meanwhile, said that it remains on target to meet a deadline of 2027 to remove Huawei kit from the radio access part of its mobile network.
