Ericsson, a Swedish telecom gear and tech giant has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian government. The MoU is to leverage 5G for the development of the country. The purpose is simple - build a framework of cooperation between Ericsson and the Nigerian government which focuses on 5G tech development, deployment and innovation. Nigeria is a key market for Ericsson as it accounts for more than 15% of the population in Africa.

Digital Transformation of Nigeria is the Target

"Supporting digital transformation objectives in Nigeria, including economic growth and improving public services through advanced, secure, and trusted 5G technology, are key factors in the cooperation," said a release from Ericsson.

There is more than one objective to this MoU or collaboration. The objectives also include things such as technology sector knowledge exchange, capacity building, and supporting the establishment of innovation hubs, and tech incubators in Nigeria. Along with all this, a keen focus would also be on improving digital literacy and developing the skills of the locals.

MoU was signed by Dr Bosun Tijani on behalf of the Nigerian government, while Patrick Johansson and Peter Olusoji Ogundele, head of Ericsson Nigeria, signed on behalf of Ericsson.

"It was an honor to show the Vice President, and his delegation colleagues, Ericsson’s leadership in 5G and technology capabilities at first-hand. We look forward to working in close partnership with the Nigerian government to develop the innovation potential of 5G for Nigerian businesses, citizens and for national digital competitiveness," said Johansson.

5G would benefit any country that it is deployed on. A partnership between the Nigerian government and a proven player like Ericsson can potentially generate fruitful results for the economy of the country.
