BT has launched BT Parental Controls, a network-based filter to help protect children online. The operator previously provided free parental controls, but only for desktop computers and laptops. The new controls cover any internet enabled device using home broadband, from PCs, laptops and games consoles to tablets and smartphones.

The filter will still be free to all customers. New customers will decide upon signing up if they want the controls or not. Existing customers will be contacted next year about the service. The new controls were tested in trials with a number of different customers and interested groups, such as Mumsnet. There will be three set filter levels, namely strict, moderate and light, with the possibility of adding or blocking more websites. The filter can be turned off or the level changed, according to customer needs at different times.
