Movistar passes 1m subs, plans LTE launch in H1 2014
Spanish-backed cellco Movistar Costa Rica intends to launch 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in the first half of 2014, BNamericas writes, citing a statement from the operator.
Movistar, which passed the one million subscriber milestone at the start of this year, will initially make the 4G offering available in the capital. Regarding its customer base, Movistar claimed that 85 percent of its subscribers use mobile broadband services, whilst 60 percent use a smartphone.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Movistar follows on the heels of Costa Rican incumbent and former monopolist Grupo Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Grupo ICE), which offers telecoms services under the ‘Kolbi’ moniker and launched its LTE offering in November last year.
