KPN to try out mobile TV via LTE in March
The Netherlands’ KPN has announced more details of its live TV service trial over its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile network. A three-month pilot service – which was announced last month – will begin on March 20 and involve 2,000 customers who already have its quad-play offering KPN Compleet, TeleGeography reports.
The trial is designed to test the quality of live TV outdoors, though the 16 channel package on offer during the test period will not include the country’s three public service channels – Nederland 1, 2 and 3 – nor the range of stations available from the main commercial broadcasters RTL and SBS. A report from local website Tweakers.net says that KPN is still negotiating the cost of the new service with the commercial channels. So, the telco has not yet released details of end-user pricing or when it expects the service to be available commercially.
KPN opened its first LTE network in May 2012 using 2.6-GHz spectrum, and went on to launch in the 800-MHz/1800-MHz band later that year.
