Australia, Japan improve LTE speeds in OpenSignal survey

The latest survey by OpenSignal shows that only about a quarter of existing LTE networks achieve good coverage as well as fast speeds, suggesting work still needs to be done to convince customers to adopt 4G, according to a report from Telecompaper.com.

The research is based on feedback from 6 million LTE users on its app, measuring their experience with download speeds and the time spent on LTE networks in order to determine availability of LTE networks.

According to figures from the second half of 2013, Australia had the highest download speeds at an average 24.5 Mbps, improving strongly from 17.5 Mbps in the previous survey. Claro Brasil was again the fastest 4G network, at 27.8 Mbps, but still has very limited coverage. Japan showed the strongest improvement in LTE speeds, going from an average 7.1 to 11.8 Mbps. Speeds in the US dropped the most, down 32 percent to 6.5 Mbps, the second-slowest global average. Tele2 Sweden remained the network with widest 4G coverage (93 percent), and Korea the country with the best coverage (91 percent).
