GM gives pricing for in-vehicle 4G LTE service

When GM begins its in-vehicle 4G LTE service next month, a driver can connect to the service for as little as $5, Pcmag.com reports, quoting the auto manufacturer’s Monday announcement. GM first announced plans to outfit some of its vehicles with the OnStar 4G LTE service, back in January, with the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu to be the first, followed by more than 30 other Chevrolets, Buicks, GMCs, and Cadillacs by the end of the year.

The technology lets a car function as a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot so passengers can connect as many as seven smartphones, tablets, video game consoles, and laptops at once. When it gets started, GM will let people try out the technology for free for the first three months, or three gigabytes, whichever comes first, and, after people begin paying for it they can log in for as low as $5 a month.

Currently, OnStar users can get a 200-MB monthly data plan for $5, which should offer enough data to stream more than 6.5 hours of music or surf the Internet for 13 hours, GM explained. If that\'s not enough, you can opt for a 1-GB monthly plan, for $15, 3-GB for $30, or 5-GB for $50, with non-OnStar subscribers still needing to fork over $5 extra for the two cheaper plans. AT&T customers will be able to add a 4G-LTE-equipped car to a mobile sharing plan for $10 a month.
