French telecom regulator Arcep has authorized railway operator SNCF to test LTE technology for professional mobile radio (PMR) in the 700 MHz band at two sites, reports Telecompaper.com on Sept 29, 2014. The first experiment, in the county of Eure-et-Loir, will evaluate LTE using a test TGV high-speed train over a 30 km stretch of the Paris-Tours line. The second, in Plaine Saint-Denis, will test LTE using a so-called "tactical bubble" (a new completely autonomous radio communications solution that can interconnect with existing PMR networks) in SNCF facilities, using low power emissions inside buildings. The experiments are aimed at evaluating technical solutions for LTE PMR for uses such as remote management and surveillance of rail traffic, transferring large files, train location monitoring, etc.
