Develop MBB with TDD Spectrum

- Broadband (BB) growth stimulates economy growth, eg. 10% BB penetration =2.5% GDP Growth in China, 1% BB penetration =0.11% GDP Growth in India, and 10% BB penetration =1.78% GDP Growth in Latin American 12 countries’ average


- Spectrum is key for BB traffic while TDD spectrum is an excellent candidate because of wide TDD spectrum at 2.3GHz (100M), 2.6GHz (200M) and 3.5GHz (400M), and mature industry


- Band 40 super wide (2300-2400, up to 100MHz), the most supported TDD spectrum

  • Supported by 1000 types device 

  • 20+ commercial networks


- Band 41 super wide (2496-2690, up to 194MHz), the most deployed TDD spectrum

  • Commercial networks in China, Japan and the US using Band 41

  • Supported by 460 types device


- Band 42/43: Fast growing 

  • Ecosystem: more and more players joined

  • Market: lots of Big operators have or are acquiring 3.5G spectrum


- TDD & FDD can get convergence and cooperation to achieve efficient utilization of spectrum and provide marvelous MBB experience  


Representatives from TDIA, China Mobile, SoftBank, Huawei attended the panel. And the main conclusions of it are as follows:

- 2.6GHz for TD-LTE has been widely deployed in the world, including 7 Band 41 commercial networks (operators from China, America, Japan and etc.) and 14 Band 38 commercial networks (including operators from Saudi Arabia). However, from the perspective of base station and subscribers, Band 41 has a larger volume and scale than Band 38. Furthermore, compared with Band7+Band 38, Band 41 is more effective by avoiding the Guard Band and has become a global trend of 2.6GHz spectrum utilization.


- From infrastructure to terminal, Band 41 industry is fully mature, there are more than 330 terminals supporting Band 41 according to GTI, GSA and TDIA.


- Call for regulators to take Band 41 as priority in 2.6GHz spectrum auction and planning. Firstly, as Band 41 has bigger industry scale than Band 38, and to maximize the industry scale, Band 41 is recommended for 2.6GHz unissued countries. Secondly, Band 7and Band 38 will bring complex interference problem, leading to lower spectrum utilization efficiency, while, Band 41 could achieve higher efficiency of spectrum utilization by synchronization and timeslot coordination.
