Spanish mobile operator Telefonica (Movistar) has reportedly bolstered its 5G network in more than 300 tourist resorts, both on the coast and further inland, as it looks to meet a surge in demand for mobile data from holidaymakers this summer. ADSLZone reports that the company has announced that more than 200 Spanish beach resorts and over 80 towns/municipalities inland will have 5G technology this summer. Broken down, the upgrades take in 49 towns in Catalonia, 41 in Andalusia, 27 in the Valencian Community, 26 in Galicia and 25 in the Balearic Islands, as well as a number of other towns and cities in Cantabria, Asturias, Murcia, the Canary Islands and the Basque Country.

Since the start of this year Movistar has been activating 5G base stations in the 700MHz band with the aim of reaching 1,400 municipalities by the end of 2022 and 2,400 the year after. Some 500 or so 700MHz installations are covered under the latest announcement serving coastal and inland tourist resorts boosting coverage to 82% of the population.
