Rogers Switches on 5G Toronto Subway Access for Customers of All Networks

Rogers Communications has enabled access to 5G services on the busiest sections of the Toronto subway system for customers of all major Canadian mobile networks.

5G data plus voice/text services via the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) mobile network are now available on: Line 1 (all stations and tunnels in the Downtown U, plus Spadina and Dupont stations; and Line 2 (13 stations from Keele to Castle Frank, plus tunnels between St George and Yonge stations).

Rogers’ CTO Ron McKenzie said: ‘Our dedicated team of technologists designed and introduced an immediate solution that added capacity, so Bell and Telus could join the network. For over ten years, subway riders have been without mobile phone services and the Rogers team is pleased to step up and make 5G a reality for all riders today.’

In April Rogers acquired the TTC cellular network from the previous operator BAI Canada and committed to deploy 5G and more reliable 911 emergency access to all 75 subway stations and to nearly 80km of track, work on which is ongoing.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate last month the federal government mandated all-carrier access to Rogers’ TTC network.
