American regional Wireless carrier UScellular has doubled its network capacity in Rumford, Maine, through the use of a small cell solution fitted to streetlights, developed in collaboration with Ubicquia. The Chicago-based carrier announced it has completed the deployment of Ericsson Street Radios, leveraging existing streetlight infrastructure to enhance 4G and 5G connectivity at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional small cell solutions.

The deployment, made possible through an agreement with the Town of Rumford, marks a milestone in efficient network expansion UScellular said noting that with Street Radio installations taking less than three minutes, it has boosted both outdoor and indoor coverage and set a new standard for rapid, efficient network expansion.
UScellular said: "Doubling network capacity in such a short timeframe and in a cost-effective manner demonstrates the transformative potential of this technology. We commend the Town of Rumford for their forward-thinking, and we're excited to work with Ubicquia to replicate this success in other municipalities."

The Town of Rumford, Maine, is Oxford County's largest municipality with a population of under 6,000 people. UScellular is the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the United States.
