Malaysian operator U Mobile has announced partnerships with eight state-backed Network Facility Provider companies (SBCs) to accelerate the rollout of Malaysia's second 5G network under the government's dual network model. The MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding) will see U Mobile tapthe local talent, expertise, and tower infrastructure footprint of these eight companies to prepare for the country's second 5G network rollout, U Mobile said in a recent announcement.
Members of the PPIT Consortium
These eight SBCs are members of Persatuan Penyedia Infrastruktur Telekomunikasi (PPIT) Malaysia and include D'Harmoni Telco Infra, Konsortium Jaringan Selangor, Perlis Comm, Infra Quest, Sacofa, Desabina Industries, PDC Telecommunication Services, and PINS Network Solutions (PPIT Consortium). This partnership will facilitate knowledge sharing and provide access to tower structures, space, and power, accelerating the establishment of 5G sites nationwide.
Cost-Efficient Commercial Models
Additionally, the parties will establish cost-efficient commercial models for various infrastructure requirements, including built-to-suit sites, co-locations, and site upgrades, with the goal of establishing a competitive and sustainable offering between U Mobile and the PPIT Consortium, the official release said.
“We're delighted to be able to work with local partners such as the PPIT Consortium, as their talent and local knowledge will be of great value to U Mobile in our quest to significantly speed up our 5G rollout, bringing the benefits and economic advantages of 5G technology to consumers, businesses, and the public sector," said U Mobile.
Additional Partnerships and Future Plans
The partnership also includes Yiked Bina, a subsidiary of EDOTCO, and EdgePoint Towers, which entered an MOU with U Mobile earlier in July 2024. The rollout of the second 5G network is expected to drive innovation across sectors such as healthcare, education, and smart cities, further contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth, the telco said.
Financing Support from AmBank
In another recent development, U Mobile has signed a contract with AmBank to prepare for the deployment of the country's second 5G network. AmBank will provide financing services to support U Mobile's 5G network deployment.
