NBN Co, a Australian government company, has begun offering 1 Gbps wholesale speeds. However, the company did not announce the availability of the new service. NBN Co executive chairman Ziggy Switkowski revealed to a Senate Select committee that the company has released the 1 Gbps/400 Mbps service for a wholesale price of AUD 150 per month (excluding the connectivity circuit charge), ZDNet Australia reports.

NBN Co had promised to launch the service this year. Switkowski said the company is not expecting to "bowled over" for the 1 Gbps service as it will likely lead to a higher cost for ISPs. NBN Co waives the connectivity circuit charge for the first 150 Mbps of capacity required at each point of interconnect.
