AT&T to buy wireless broadband spectrum from Cable One

AT&T is seeking to buy an advanced wireless spectrum (AWS) from MSO Cable One, based in Phoenix, Arizona, in order to expand its LTE network, Telecompaper reported, citing an FCC notice released on Feb 6.

Cable One would sell 20 MHz of AWS-1 A Block spectrum to AT&T in 24 cellular market areas in various states. The Cable One-AT&T proposal follows similar deals that Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Cox Communications established with Verizon Wireless in 2011. Cable One and AT&T have not announced the value of the proposed transaction.

"The applicants assert that the proposed assignment would serve the public interest because it would enable AT&T to increase its system capacity to enhance existing services, better accommodate overall growth, and facilitate the provision of additional products and services to public geographic areas authorized under the licenses," the FCC said in its public notice. The commission has set a deadline of Feb 20 for parties that oppose the transaction to file petitions.
