Mexican-backed cellco Claro Colombia has opened 4G services in the Colombian capital, Bogota, making it the fourth operator to provide Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the country, TeleGeography reports, quoting El Tiempo.

The cellco will bring 4G services for the same price as its 3G, and provide 20 LTE-compatible handsets. Subscribers with a compatible handset can get a new SIM free for the 4G with no change in pricing. And 3G/4G customers will have access to Claro Video\'s video-on-demand (VoD) platform, currently with more than 12,000 titles. For the moment, this is only available in Bogota, but Claro\'s technology VP, Hugo Salazar, was quoted as saying that the operator will extend coverage to 50 percent of the population, within 90 days.

Une-EPM started Colombia\'s first 4G network, in June 2012, with Tigo and Movistar following in December 2013. Meanwhile, Avantel, is expected to activate its LTE platform in the second quarter of 2014.
