SK Telecom (SKT), South Korea’s largest operator by subscribers, is gearing up to introduce Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) technology this week, allowing it to provide end-users maximum theoretical download speeds of 225Mbps, Telegeography.com reports quoting CNET.

The LTE-A broadband service utilizes carrier aggregation (CA) technology that combines 10MHz and 20MHz spectrum blocks to triple the 75Mbps speeds it delivers over its LTE network without aggregation.

The first handset to support LTE-A speeds has been unveiled as Samsung’s flagship smartphone – Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A – which will be available exclusively on SKT’s network. Manufacturers LG Electronics and Pantech are also planning to debut new LTE-A compatible devices by early-July.

SKT first demonstrated transmission speeds of 225Mbps via 10MHz+20MHz CA in November 2013. Further, in February 2014 it showcased its LTE-A three-band CA technology at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, delivering download speeds of 450Mbps, which was achieved by aggregating three component carriers (20MHz each).
