Warid gearing up for 4G launch

UAE-backed cellco Warid has approached customers with 4G-enabled handsets, offering them a chance to trial 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, Telegeography.com reported on Aug 19, 2014. Warid has reportedly offered to provide eligible subscribers with upgraded 4G SIMs in order to test the service when it becomes available. Warid is planning to launch 4G next month, although the cellco has yet to gain approval from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for the service. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Warid did not take part in the auction for 3G and 4G frequencies earlier this year but intends to use its existing spectrum holdings to offer advanced data services. Warid’s license allows for the development, but requires approval from the PTA to do so. The regulator rejected Warid’s initial application, saying that its initial application was too vague and failed to address how much of the cellco’s spectrum would be dedicated to LTE or any impact that the change might have on its 2G services.
