MTS to expand LTE femtocells in major cities
Russian mobile operator MTS plans to expand its LTE network by deploying femtocells (small, low-power cellular base stations) in major cities, Telecompaper.com reported on Sept 16, 2014. The operator expects to cut expenses and to resolve the problem of a lack of frequencies. MTS has already built 200 LTE femtocells in the cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, and femtocells will be deployed in other cities in 2015-2016. The equipment will be used in order to provide indoor coverage, as well as to cover parks, public transport stops, pedestrian areas and other locations.
