Brazil ends August with 277.41 million mobile connections

Brazil ended August 2014 with 277,408,559 active mobile telephony lines and a penetration rate of 136.70 percent, Telecompaper.com reports on Oct 14, 2014. A total of 1.26 million lines were added in August compared with July, while compared with August 2013, net additions totaled 8.97 million. In the eighth month of 2014, there were 212.86 million pre-paid connections (76.73% of total) and 64.55 million post-paid ones (23.27%).

Vivo continues to be market leader with 79,665,807 mobile connections (28.85% vs 28.75 in July), followed by TIM Participacoes with 74,704,562 (27.05% vs 26.93 in July), Claro with 69,303,898 (25.10% vs 24.96 in July) and Oi with 51,267,380 (18.56% vs 18.50 in July). However, Nextel Brazil had the most significant performance, tripling its small share from 0.12 percent to 0.43 percent in eight months, adding 769,900 new customers and taking its total to 1,179,834.

Only Vivo (1.9 million new connections) and TIM (1.1 million) have had a better performance since the start of 2014. The list of operators continues with Algar/CTBC with 1,121,038 (0.41%), Porto Seguro with 113,333 (0.04%) and Sercomtel with 51,827 (0.02%).

In terms of access technology, GSM leads with 134,038,641 (48.54%), followed by WCDMA with 122,570,194 (44.38%), M2M with 9,207,673 (3.33%), broadband data with 6,647,216 (2.41%), LTE with 3,676,040 (1.33%) and CDMA with 13,347.
