Swan encounters competitors\' resistance in national roaming

Slovak fourth mobile operator Swan, which gained an LTE license at the end of 2013 and so far has been present in the market only as a fixed triple-play operator, admitted at a press conference that when launching its mobile operations, its expectations were exaggerated, Telecompaper.com writes on Oct 20, 2014. The operator depended on national roaming on the networks of the other mobile operators, but commercial negotiations with the competitors got stuck. Swan is now depending on regulator RU to intervene, as the LTE licenses assume the obligation to provide national roaming once the new entrant reaches LTE 20 percent territorial coverage.

Apart from the problems with an agreement on national roaming, Swan\'s commercial launch of LTE services may be delayed in spite of progress declared. Although Swan will do its best to start commercial services as soon as possible, the originally assumed LTE launch date of 1 December is questionable. Swan has conducted a demonstration of LTE in Trnava.

It is also close to an agreement with Slovak Post, which earlier announced its plans to start operating as a virtual branded operator without its own network. Swan is now preparing a plan B, which could provide LTE data packages in selected cities, as an alternative to fixed internet, however, that will not suffice for a full-fledged fourth mobile operator, either in terms of goodwill, or in profits.
