SingTel and Ericsson reach 4G agreements

Ericsson, a Swedish multinational provider of communications technology and services, has signed 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) deals with Singapore’s SingTel, TeleGeography reported on Monday, in the first of which, SingTel will introduce voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services for the domestic market within the next few months. Ericsson says the technology allows for much faster connection times and improved call quality. SingTel’s VoLTE service will also be the first of its kind to come with Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) capability, which automatically switches calls to the 3G network without interruption if the user loses the 4G connection.

In another matter, Ericsson has announced that SingTel is planning to deploy its LTE-Advanced equipment later this year to increase peak theoretical download speeds on the 4G network to 300 Mbps. It will also look to improve video streaming with a trial of LTE Broadcast technology and provide enhanced indoor coverage in a trial of Ericsson’s new Radio Dot System in the second half of 2014. The vendor explains that the Radio Dot System uses cost-effective, ultra-compact radio antennas to extend 4G and 3G coverage to hard-to-reach areas in offices and apartments, wherever mobile signals can be blocked by walls and partitions.
