Hungary gears up for 4G-capable spectrum auction

Hungary telecom regulator National Media and Telecommunications Authority (NMHH) is looking to issue a tender for an auction of wireless spectrums in the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1,800MHz and 2,600MHz bands that are suitable for 2G, 3G or 4G services, Reuters reports quoting local newspaper Napi Gazdasag. The government expects to raise HUF120 billion ($531 million) through the sale.

The 800MHz “digital dividend” band became available in October last year when the country switched off its analogue TV transmissions. At present, there are three mobile network operators – T-Mobile, Telenor (formerly Pannon) and Vodafone – in the country serving a total of 11.2 million subscribers among them, according to statistics at the end of September 2013.
