Pakistan has completed its long-awaited auction of 3rd- and 4th-generation (3G and 4G) concessions, with 3G licenses going to Mobilink, Telenor Pakistan, China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak/Zong), and Pakistan Telecommunications Mobile Ltd (PTML/Ufone), and Zong being the only winner of 4G spectrum, reports Telegeography.com, which explains that Zong and Mobilink each won 10-MHz in the 2100-MHz band, while Ufone and Telenor each got 5-MHz apiece in the same range.

Zong also came away with a further 10-MHz in the 1800-MHz band, for 4G services. In capitalizing on its 4G win, Zong has started a new marketing campaign calling itself Pakistan’s first and only 4G network and accompanying that with a logo change.

Zong is backed by China Mobile, the world’s largest cellco by subscriber, and in a good position to exploit its 4G advantage, while benefiting from economies of scale, especially given its parent company’s ongoing Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) network introduction in China.
