Smile to roll out LTE in Abuja, Port Harcourt in August
Smile Communications Nigeria plans to expand its 4G LTE network to Abuja and Port Harcourt, in August. This follows the launch of services in Ibadan, last year, and Lagos, in February. A local newspaper, This Day, quotes the company’s chief corporate services officer, Lee-Ann Cassie, as saying that Smile will then focus on bringing the 4G network to other cities, including Benin, as well as offering voice-over-LTE, Telegeography.com reports.
The Pan-African 4G operator Smile Group was founded in 2007 and opened East Africa’s first 4G LTE network, in Tanzania, in March 2012. It also operates in Uganda, where it introduced LTE to Kampala, in June 2013, with plans to launch for the Democratic Republic of Congo, late in 2014.
