Jio and RCOM line up spectrum sharing deal

Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) are set to expand on their partnership, with the latter to gain access to RCOM’s spectrum in the 800MHz and 2,100MHz ranges, Telegeography.com writes citing Business Standard.

Once the spectrum is liberalized, RJIL will be able to use the 800MHz band to augment its Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, the frequency range offering greater indoor coverage than its own 2,300MHz and 1,800MHz airwaves.

A ruling from the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in April this year overturned a previous ban on intra-circle roaming agreements, permitting companies to sign up new subscribers outside of their licensed area via pacts with other operators.

However, there remains a degree of uncertainty regarding 3G spectrum sharing and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is looking for a decision from the Telecom Commission on the matter.

RJIL and RCOM, owned by brothers Mukesh and Anil Ambani respectively, have already signed a number of partnership deals, including pacts to share inter and intra-city fiber-optic cable networks as well as tower sites.
