Zimbabwe’s mobile market leader Econet Wireless announced a nationwide expansion of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, local newspaper New Zimbabwe reports, quoting its CEO Douglas Mboweni as saying: “We launched 4G around the time of the UNWTO [United Nations World Tourism Organization] conference held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Right now the issue we are looking at is expanding it to other areas.”

The executive also hinted that Econet has already begun looking at future upgrades of its wireless networks: “Even though there was still a lot of work to be done on 3G, the company will forge ahead exploring new technologies such as 5G to ensure customers continue to enjoy high speed,” he said.

Econet started LTE in parts of Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls in August 2013, and had reached an estimated 20,000 users by the end of March 2014.
