PTA extends Vodafone 2.6GHz MMDS license until end of 2016

Iceland’s telecoms watchdog, the Post and Telecom Administration (PTA), has extended Vodafone’s (Fjarskipti’s) use of the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) in the 2500MHz-2690MHz frequency band, Telegeography.com reports, citing a press release that said the operator is now authorized to use all 23 channels, each with a bandwidth of 8-MHz, for MMDS television services in the south and southwestern parts of the country, until December 31, 2016.

The PTA gave the public room to comment on the move, in October 2013, pointing out that Vodafone Iceland, which is licensed on the 2508MHz-2564MHz, 2572MHz-2644MHz, and 2652MHz-2668MHz frequency bands until June 27, 2014, had requested an extension of its concession until 2020. The company had previously indicated that part of the 2.6-GHz frequency band could be used for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile services, but the PTA said that in spite of rapid 4G growth, there was no shortage of suitable spectrum. Nonetheless, it said, the response indicates that such shortages could arise ‘within few years’, hence its decision to extend Vodafone’s license by just two years.
